Chapter 10 only requires my support.
Chapter 10 only requires my support.
Lin Chang'er was dumbfounded. Her mother-in-law, uncles, and aunts were still alive, and she had children to feed. She never dared to dream of remarrying with her ex-husband's pension.
She described herself as having weak family ties. Back in that world, her family never lacked for material things, but because of her parents' special status, the family rarely got together.
Her family provided very little emotional care and companionship, which fostered her solitary nature and caused her to suffer a lot because of it in her early years.
Later, she went into business, which opened up new horizons in her social life, but to be fair, it wasn't that she lacked experience in getting along with her in-laws.
Rather, she simply didn't know how to get along with her family.
But she was still just a mortal, and she retained that soft spot in her heart.
It's impossible for Gu's mother not to be moved by her words, which were spoken with such sincerity.
She thought that perhaps God felt she had never experienced family affection, so He was giving her another chance?
She originally just felt that she needed this identity, and the Gu family was not bad, so they all made do with each other.
But if they all treat her sincerely, she is willing to try to treat them as family.
"Mother," Lin Chang'er thought, but she was still not used to it. She tugged at the corners of her lips, and though it was just one word, she said it with difficulty.
Gu's mother was taken aback, then choked out a "Yes!" and stared at her intently, as if hoping she would say something more.
Lin Chang'er smiled and said, "I've been married once, and I won't marry again." She always believed that the hardships of marriage were not unavoidable, and that things were fine as they were now.
Gu's mother nodded, then paused, "What did you say?"
Lin Chang'er chuckled softly, "Right now, all I want to do is take good care of my goldfish and Gu Xiaolu."
Gu's mother was still dazed and asked hesitantly, "Are you serious?"
Lin Chang'er nodded, then said, "Mother knows the situation at home better than I do."
Now that Sanlang is gone, if we just stick to the status quo, we'll only end up squandering our resources.
So I'll try to do some business to make a living and improve my family's financial situation. "There are always gains and losses in business, so I can't make any absolute statements."
Upon hearing this, tears welled up in Gu's mother's eyes.
Just a few days ago, my third daughter-in-law was a delicate young woman who never left the house, but now she is eager to take on the burdens of the family.
Overwhelmed with emotion, she covered her eyes and took a deep breath, "Then, what do you need me to do?"
Lin Chang'er's eyes flickered. "Mother, you just need to support my decision."
"Alright!" Mother Gu took a deep breath, as if she had made a great decision. "From now on, whatever you do, I will support you. If there is anything you can do to help Dalang and Erlang, just let me know."
Lin Chang'er nodded and agreed. With this promise, Gu's mother would help her cover up any unusual behavior she might do in the future.
She is straightforward and impatient, and doesn't like to waste time on unnecessary things, such as explaining how the fish were caught today.
As for Gu Dalang and Gu Erlang, while their individual fighting style is certainly cool and dashing, they don't necessarily have to endure unnecessary suffering.
After all, many hands make light work, and two heads are better than one.
As long as the Gu family members aren't foolish enough to hold us back, we don't need to worry about not being able to manage them.
After finishing the business, Lin Chang'er told Gu's mother about the medicine given to her by the old lady next door.
Then Gu's mother sighed and said, "I'm not familiar with her, but Sanlang sees her all alone and feels sorry for her, so when he goes to fetch water, he always helps her fill the water vat."
According to Sanlang, she used to be a female doctor, but for some reason she stopped treating patients.
If she gives it to you willingly, it must be useful.
Lin Chang'er nodded and said, "I understand."
Gu's mother paused again and asked, "You sent her fish because of this?"
Lin Chang'er hummed in agreement, and Gu's mother nodded repeatedly, "You are a thorough person."
She looked at Lin Chang'er, a faint light gleaming in her eyes.
As the two were talking, Sister-in-law Gu had already prepared the fish soup, and Gu Silang and Little Goldfish had just returned after delivering the fish.
Gu Ersao and the others returned early. Seeing Lin Chang'er talking with Gu's mother in the main room, they joined Gu Erlang, Gu Xiaolu, and Gu Xiaoman to play in the courtyard.
Now that everyone was present, Gu Erlang came in to inquire.
As darkness fell, the oil lamp in the kitchen was finally lit. When Lin Chang'er and Gu's mother went over, there was already a large bowl of cornbread and a large bowl of vegetable porridge on the table, which was the Gu family's original dinner.
The little ones were already sitting obediently at the table, waiting for the fish soup to be served.
Gu Ersao was helping to set the table when she saw Lin Chang'er and smiled at her.
As she ladled out the fish soup, Sister-in-law Gu greeted them, "Mother, sister-in-law, please have a seat. It will be ready soon."
Lin Chang'er didn't stand on ceremony with her and sat down with Gu's mother. After Gu's sister-in-law brought out a large bowl of fish soup, the family happily started eating.
In this era, it's rare to eat meat unless it's a holiday.
Ultimately, it was the lack of seasoning that made this fish soup less than delicious for Lin Chang'er.
However, let's eat our fill first, then eat well, and take it slow!
Fortunately, the Gu family enjoyed the meal, especially Gu Xiaoman, who held the wooden spoon dipped in the fish soup in her other hand and licked it, her face full of delight, "So delicious!"
It made the whole family burst into laughter.
As for the adults, they would only eat a few of the younger children and would also help nitpick, so they didn't actually eat much during the meal.
But when the children are happy, the adults are happy too.
After the party ended, Lin Chang'er called out to Gu Dalang, "Brother, do you know how to make a fish trap?"
In the original owner's memories, Gu Dalang had learned the craft from the old bamboo craftsman in the village. Although it was not for long and he was not very proficient, he should have no problem making a fish trap.
Gu Dalang was taken aback. When the Lin family came to cause trouble, he went out to fetch a doctor. Only after returning did he hear from his wife about how formidable his third sister-in-law was.
He never dared to imagine that his third sister-in-law, whom he used to rarely even meet, would take the initiative to talk to him.
He was so shocked that he was stunned for a while before he could react. It was his sister-in-law who tugged at his sleeve to remind him, "Your sister-in-law is asking you a question!"
Gu Dalang then seemed to wake from a dream, "Yes, yes, when are you going to have a sister-in-law? How many?"
Lin Chang'er's eyes lit up. "The sooner the better! I'll take two or three, okay?"
Gu Dalang thought for a moment, "We still have some split bamboo strips at home, but not enough to make that many. I'll weave one for you tonight, and the rest we'll make tomorrow when my second brother goes up the mountain to cut bamboo. Is that alright?"
Lin Chang'er nodded, "Alright! Then I'll wait for you, Big Brother."
At this moment, Gu Erlang asked, "Is your sister-in-law in a hurry?"
Lin Chang'er replied, "On the way back, I saw several schools of fish. If we set traps tonight, we'll definitely catch some fish."
Gu Erlang looked at Gu Dalang, "Big brother, didn't you make a cage for third brother before?"
Gu Dalang slapped his forehead, "Look at my memory!"
Having said that, he immediately called Gu Erlang to find the earth cage.
Lin Chang'er didn't say much. She washed the ground cage clean with water, asked Gu's mother for a windproof lamp, and then went out.
Mother Gu was worried and offered to accompany her, but Sister-in-law Gu quickly said, "Mother, you rest, I'll go with my sister-in-law."
Gu Silang also hurriedly chimed in, "Me too, me too, me too."
Lin Chang'er hummed in agreement, and Gu Silang secretly nodded to the little goldfish.
Just as the three were about to leave, they heard someone call out from the doorway, "Is Aunt Gu asleep?"
