Chapter 6 "The Protagonist"
Chapter 6 "The Protagonist"
Edmund Clemens.
An ordinary young man living in a middle-class neighborhood in Karenbell.
His simple yet elegant attire, his personality that was neither aloof nor eccentric, and his deep eyes that always carried a hint of inexplicable melancholy, just like his short, dark flaxen hair that resembled the sound of pine trees in the wind.
He's easy to get along with, friendly, and has a heart of gold—that's how his neighbors always describe him when asked about him.
Logically speaking, someone like Edmund, who is separated from Edith by a thick barrier called the "aristocratic class," would never have a deep connection with Edith in his lifetime unless by a stroke of luck.
months ago.
A sudden, cold voice jolted Edith awake from her drowsy state as she counted sheep in bed.
Beneath the grand curtain of fate, we are all puppets manipulated by invisible threads, moving towards either victory or sorrow amidst joys and sorrows, laughter and happiness.
The source of a hurricane may be the flapping of a butterfly's wings, and the cause of its collapse may be nothing more than an unstudded horseshoe.
The world is made up of countless ordinary people. This system is dedicated to helping the host discover those obscured stars until their starlight is enough to illuminate the entire night sky.
And so, a strange entity calling itself the "Gala Wood Strategy System" abruptly entered Edith's life.
A story simulation? The only playable character is Edith Enfield.
Wait, isn't that me?
My Own Life Simulator?
ha?
Just as energetic young people always focus their attention on things that are full of unknowns and dedication, and are also enough to kill time, after a brief period of doubt and vigilance, Edith quickly adapted and got used to spending her time on 'pushing the storyline of a visual novel', and even stayed in her bedroom all day without going out.
The near-infinite number of simulations in the system were like giving this girl, who lived deep in the castle, wings to fly freely, allowing her to fully appreciate the vastness and grandeur of the world.
Ice spikes and snow-capped mountains in the far north, yellow sand and caves in the far west...
The deepest darkness in the dungeon, forgotten gold and treasures, or perhaps the still-burning fire demon hidden in the deepest shadows.
Correspondingly, there were naturally one bizarre and outlandish way to die.
Frozen to death, killed by monsters in the ruins, run over by a carriage, trampled to death by the plundering beasts tamed by bandits on the wasteland...
As the number of simulations increased, Edith gradually discovered that her story seemed to always revolve around a man named "Edmund Clemens".
She was rescued by Edmund's adventurer group when she was in danger; at the family banquet, her father pulled her up to a young man and introduced him as "Edmund Clemons, a powerful adventurer, and also your future brother-in-law"; or decades later at his funeral, watching her usually optimistic elf sister, Eyarn, dressed in black robes, stand silently and heartbroken before the tombstone inscribed with "Edmund Clemons"...
The ever-changing fate is like a turbulent whirlpool, while Edmund Clemens is like a bright green leaf in the center of the whirlpool that has not yet been swallowed up, standing out in this dark torrent.
Edith then began to approach him in the simulation.
"Oh? You want to become an adventurer?" The young man looked at the clearly pampered girl before him. "But you can't even hold a sword properly."
Edith remained as aloof as ever: "But no one is born to take risks, is he?"
"But I haven't taken any risks in a long time."
"You can teach me too!" She thought of how Alicia had pestered Edmund for lessons in a previous playthrough, but she had more of a stubbornness and pride like a young animal than her sister.
"Oh? If it's just about teaching you adventure, that's fine."
"However," the young man's gaze was unfathomable, "let me make this clear beforehand, Miss Edith, I'm only responsible for what's within my teaching duties. Anything outside of that... will require extra payment."
"Okay!"
Simulation after simulation, companionship after companionship, from the very first year, two years, five years, ten years...
What Edith longed for most was the simulation she had just finished a few days ago.
She and Edmund led their adventure party from the entrance of the underground city of Kalenbel all the way to the darkest part of the abyss, and then from the deepest part they went up from the bottom, and finally left the underground city through the exit in the ancient city of yellow sand in the far west. The group climbed up the ruins of the giant tower of the ancient golden age and witnessed for the first time the sunrise and sunset of the ancient golden age that had only been recorded in epics.
"Heroes stand tall, bearing the glory of the past, under the setting sun that once illuminated that glory."
He recited verses written by ancient poets.
"Deep within the earth, there is neither sun nor moon; on the distant horizon, golden light shines brilliantly, but compared to you, all of this pales in comparison."
Golden light bathed his short, dark flaxen hair, and in Edith's eyes, the young man's eyes seemed to hold a flame more intense than the sunset.
In the days that followed, the two walked through fields covered in green grass, chased fireflies fluttering and twinkling along the banks of a rushing river, and left their last breaths under the witness of the bright moon and the ocean. Every story was so unforgettable.
A complete guide to the dungeon, a vow witnessed by the Holy Light, the joy of becoming a mother, the happiness of having many children and grandchildren, and the tranquility of dying peacefully in one's old age.
Everything was so beautiful.
[The simulation is complete. The normal ending "Oath Under the Sun" for the Edith Enfield route has been unlocked.]
[The saved content and ending have been added to the "CG Gallery," which you can access at any time!]
A brand new path has been paved; please approach it with utmost positivity and hope to write a beautiful story in reality!
Enjoy the game!
The cold, impersonal subtitles on the pale blue screen pulled Edith back to reality.
A...normal ending?
Is this just a normal ending?
On what grounds?
Edith stared in disbelief at the locked box in the "CG Appreciation" section, shrouded in a dark mist and labeled "True Ending."
If this kind of ending doesn't count as a true ending, then what can be considered a true ending?
Also, what is the "Edith main storyline"?
Could it be that, besides himself, there are others who share the same unforgettable stories as Edmund?
Edith knew that in the first few simulations, Edmund had interacted with Alicia, Eyarn, and others, and some even ended up spending their lives together.
You mean, the story of one of those people can be called the true ending?
But mine can only be labeled "ordinary"?
Whenever Edith reopens the "CG Appreciation" app, she lies in bed, panting, recalling those intimate "memories" and those tender words that only she knows.
Then there's the thought that all of this might appear in someone else's life in a better way, and that "someone else" might even be her older sister Alicia, who has always been one step ahead of her since childhood and has made it impossible for her to turn the tables.
Edith would feel a wave of nausea and dry heave in a dizzying, nauseous state.
I don't want to become just a background character in their happy stories.
The simulations are all fake!
It's all fake!
Only I am real!
She looked at the doll that lay quietly against her pillow, crookedly sewing "Edmund" with needle and thread, and that kept her company as she fell asleep every night.
This time.
I will be the only protagonist in the story.
