Chapter 36 "Hallucination"

Chapter 36 "Hallucination"

"Your Highness, before the city lord officially announces your arrival to the public..."

"It's best if you don't reveal your whereabouts easily."

The elegantly dressed young woman gently pulled the gauze curtains that covered the window, and the blue sky, white doves, goddess statue, and pedestrians feeding birds outside the window seemed to be scenes on a canvas that had been erased.

The blonde girl sitting opposite her pouted in dissatisfaction.

"I was just looking at the scenery outside the window."

"I like watching the streets and houses rush past the window, observing the different expressions and appearances of the people on the street. This is the first time I've seen people sitting under the statue of the goddess feeding birds, but I couldn't even see their faces clearly."

"Are you going to take away even this last bit of fun from my tedious journey, Adele?"

"I am merely following orders, Your Highness Aretil, to eliminate all risks and prevent any unforeseen complications during your journey. This is His Majesty's command, and it is my duty to fulfill."

The elegant woman, called Adele, lowered her head and straightened the slightly wrinkled hem of her skirt as she stood up.

"Yes, yes, perhaps there are assassins sent by my royal brothers outside the window. Just by seeing my face, they can silently shoot poisoned bolts with hand crossbows made of dwarven steel, piercing this magical glass made by the elves."

Aretil complained that she was as beautiful and youthful as any seventeen or eighteen-year-old girl, but her expression was as dejected as that of an old man on his deathbed.

"Since they are as ubiquitous and inescapable as the evil spirits of necromancers, I might as well just give me a quick death and let me see the outside world one last time before I die."

"I don't want to ascend to the temple of the Holy Light Goddess and have my soul tested, only to be discovered by the deity who controls death and judgment that my memories of the past ten years consist of that narrow and boring corner of the palace."

Adele didn't speak, but simply glanced to the side. Clearly, her master had said similar discouraging things countless times along the way.

"You are my substitute; you are wearing my clothes."

Arethel looked at Adele, who was dressed in a magnificent royal gown, then lowered her head and lifted her own dark gray fishtail dress, and suddenly laughed.

"Even if there are assassins, they'll deal with you first."

"So, could I open the curtains, Adele?"

"A ruthless assassin won't hesitate because of different clothing when carrying out an assassination, Your Highness Aretil," Adele said with a hint of helplessness, looking at the prince's smiling face.

"Ugh."

Aretil sighed softly and leaned back in his leather seat.

"I really don't know why."

"Instead of expending so much effort to deal with me, a princess born out of wedlock, my royal brothers and sisters should think of ways to strengthen the forces supporting them."

"I just want to find a quiet place to stay."

"But they always manage to drag me into these inexplicable struggles," Aretil said, tilting her head back and rubbing her forehead in exasperation.

"Do they really think I can defy fate and become the heir to my father's throne? Even if those electors' brains were kicked into coffee latte art by the deer in my father's garden, they still wouldn't make such a decision."

"Perhaps... they feel that although you are not good-looking, you have unlimited potential."

"Unlimited potential, but I think I... ugh, ah, damn it."

Aretil suddenly rubbed her cheeks in frustration, her hands supporting her forehead as she fiddled with her bangs, her chest heaving with her rapid breathing.

"Adeleyn, my hallucinations seem to be getting worse."

"Your Highness...?" Adele sat down next to Aretil with concern.

"You know I can always see things that others can't."

Aretil reached out and swiped her hand in mid-air as if touching invisible buttons and screens.

"Look, there's a strange thing here that glows like a prophetic crystal in my eyes, covered with square characters that I can't understand."

"But there's clearly nothing there," Adele said.

"Yes, everyone says that." Aretil blinked, her brows twitching as if she were using tears to completely erase these illusions from her mind.

"My father thinks this is a lie I made up to shirk responsibility. My brothers and sisters think it's a mental illness caused by my mother's inferior bloodline. Some even think it's because I'm precocious and have the cunning to pretend to be crazy at such a young age. So, although I have no background or support, I have that damned 'unlimited potential'."

Adele poured a cup of hot tea for Aretil from the kettle.

Aretil took the cup, closed her eyes, took a big gulp, shook her head, and then looked despairing.

"Oh my God, it's still there."

"You know what, Adele?"

"At first, it was just a box this big with a bunch of random squares written inside." Aretil gestured with her hand to show the size of a cell phone on Earth.

"It's already this big now." She spread her arms, gesturing to the size of a 27-inch computer screen. "A large, pale blue frame with a constantly flashing red border is playing the 'Love, Love, Love' song in my head like a madcap." (error! error!)

Adele gently patted Aretil's back, comforting the girl who was tormented by the unknown and fear and was about to become a frightened bird, like an older sister.

"Perhaps we can find something in the dungeon that can cure your hallucinations."

"Maybe..."

Aretil lowered her head and remained silent for a while.

"but."

"but?"

"I can't describe the sound of 'Ai Ruo Ai Ruo,' but I used some methods to draw the square runes on the large light blue frame here."

She pulled out a small leather suitcase from under the seat and took out a small notebook.

"So I want to ask you for a favor."

"Your Highness." Adele looked at the blonde girl with a serious and solemn expression.

"After I 'officially' arrived in Karenbel, I was no longer able to leave my residence at will."

"The rest of the schedule was filled with selecting adventurers and forming teams."

"I hope that when it is inconvenient for me to leave, you can find some knowledgeable adventurers in the city of Kalenbel, preferably those who have traveled outside the Holy Kingdom."

"Some of them may have seen these strange runes before."

"I will do my best." Adele took the notebook.

The notebook was densely covered with square characters.

If Edmund were here.

He would find it clearly written above:
