Chapter 11 Discovering Potatoes
Chapter 11 Discovering Potatoes
She followed the system's instructions and found herself in a field covered with potato leaves.
She dug up a plant with her hands, picked up four or five potatoes of different sizes hanging below, the largest of which was only the size of a baby's fist because no one was taking care of it.
However, the quantity was too large; this area alone weighed at least two hundred kilograms. They didn't need much for seeds, and the rest was enough for the family to eat for a month.
Wen Luozhi picked up the potato in her hand and walked back. When she saw Wen Zixun, she held the potato up to him and said proudly, "Sixth Brother, look what delicious food I found!"
Wen Zixun took a closer look and was so frightened that he slapped the potato out of Wen Luozhi's hand and pulled her far away, saying, "Little sister, that thing is poisonous! You can't eat it!"
A village child once discovered this, took it home, and his family ate it. They suffered from severe vomiting and diarrhea and were nearly killed. When the villagers heard about it, they stayed as far away from this thing as possible.
Wen Zixun told Wen Luozhi about it, and Wen Luozhi frowned and thought for a moment before saying to him, "Sixth Brother, this is called a potato. That family should be eating sprouted or green ones, but I don't have any."
"I wanted to dig up a few more for lunch."
After saying that, she picked up the potato that had been knocked off the ground and held it in her arms like a treasure.
Wen Zixun panicked and, in a fit of anger, tried to snatch it away. "Sister, I'll listen to you on everything else, but you absolutely can't eat this!" He reached out and tried to pull her arm away.
"I said I can eat it, and I mean I can eat it! If you try to take it again, I'll tell Dad and Mom that you're bullying me!" Wen Luozhi glared at Wen Zixun and said fiercely.
Hmph, she won't get away with it if she's not a bit fierce!
Sure enough, Wen Zixun shrank back when he saw her look like she would risk her life if he tried to take her away. And with what she said, he dared not go forward to snatch her away.
Wen Luozhi snorted smugly. You can't stand firm if you're not ruthless.
She turned and headed into the wilderness, with Wen Zixun following behind anxiously, his mind racing.
If his sister really wants to eat it later, he'll try it first. That way, even if it's poisonous, his sister will be fine. He's healthy, so he won't die from the suffering!
The brother and sister dug up several more plants, and only stopped when there was a small pile on the ground.
Wenzi gathered some firewood and started a fire. Once the fire was big enough, Wen Luozhi threw round potatoes into the fire to bury them.
While waiting for the potatoes to ripen, she didn't rest. She pulled Wenzi along to continue searching for wild animals nearby.
She spotted chicken droppings in the weeds and crept over quietly, and sure enough, she found a pheasant.
"Sixth Brother, look over there," she whispered, pointing behind a large rock.
Wen Zixun followed her hand and looked over; several long feathers were swaying gently behind the stone.
He patted his chest, indicating that he could handle Wen Luozhi without any problem, and Wen Luozhi gave him a thumbs-up.
Wen Zixun tiptoed over, barely daring to breathe, and when he was a step away from the stone, he leaned forward and suddenly grabbed the few tufts of feathers.
He quickly lifted it up, and a pheasant weighing about six pounds struggled wildly in his hand. Before he could even grin and show it off to Wen Luozhi, the pheasant kicked hard with its two claws, leaving only a few feathers in Wen Zixun's hand.
Wen Luozhi had been observing this area. At the critical moment, she quickly redeemed a slingshot from the system, picked up a large stone, and slinged it at the chicken's head.
The pheasant let out a shriek and staggered a few steps on the ground. Before it could react, Wen Luozhi rushed over and grabbed it.
"Sixth Brother, quickly find something to tie its wings and claws back on."
Her excited voice rang out, and Wen Zixun finally came to his senses, saying with a look of annoyance, "I almost let it get away, thank goodness I had my sister!"
If such a large pheasant had slipped away right under his nose today, he would have been furious.
“Little sister, what you just did…” His eyes lit up. He had just seen his sister pull a slingshot out of her sleeve and then “whoosh” it went and the pheasant couldn’t escape.
That's amazing!
The situation was so urgent that she acted without thinking. Wen Luozhi panicked for a moment but then regained her composure. "Oh, that slingshot? I bought it when I went to town before because I thought it was fun," she said casually.
Wen Zixun looked at her expectantly, and she instantly understood, casually tossing the slingshot in her hand to him. "Sixth Brother, if you want to play, here you go."
"Thank you, little sister!" Wen Zixun happily clutched the slingshot to his chest, thinking about whether he could shoot some birds later to roast for his sister.
The brother and sister carried the pheasant back to the field. Wen Zixun kept his eyes fixed on the pheasant, afraid that it would run away.
Wen Luozhi found it amusing and reminded him, "Sixth Brother, the potatoes in the fire are ready."
She could already smell that familiar caramelized aroma; the potatoes weren't very big, so they were definitely edible.
Wen Zixun reluctantly shifted his gaze to the now-extinguished fire, and quickly pulled out the potatoes.
Wen Luozhi had long since digested the porridge she drank that morning, and now, smelling the aroma of roasted porridge, she reached out and scooped up a piece. Wen Zixun snatched it from her hand and looked at Wen Luozhi as if she were a hero going to her death, saying, "Sister, Sixth Brother eats first. You can eat later if Sixth Brother is alright."
Wen Luozhi: ...Actually, there's no need for that.
"Sixth Brother, you just need to peel off the outer skin," she reminded him from the side.
Wen Zixun carefully peeled the potatoes, and the aroma of the potatoes wafted into his nose. He began to believe his sister's words.
After peeling the potatoes, he glanced at Wen Luozhi, only to find that she was already eating them!
"Why are you looking at me? Hurry up and eat!" Wen Luozhi raised an eyebrow at him. She had already started eating her second one!
Wen Zixun took a bite, and a caramelized aroma mixed with the unique fragrance of potatoes spread in his mouth. His eyes lit up, and he put the rest into his mouth.
He ate several before finally speaking, "Little sister! This smells so good! What was it called again? Potato...?"
He said excitedly, "I'm not so hungry anymore. This little thing is quite filling!" He had long forgotten about whether it was poisoned or not.
How could something so delicious be poisonous!
Wen Luozhi smiled, a smug look in her eyes. "I knew it!"
"Let's dig some up and take it back today, then we'll call Mom and Dad to come and dig the rest together."
Since the two of them didn't bring any tools or supplies, they couldn't possibly dig all the way out. They could just take some back for everyone to try.
Wen Zixun nodded and followed Wen Luozhi in digging. When they had dug enough, they saw that it was still early and wandered around in the mountains for a while. They actually caught a pheasant and two rabbits.
By the time they arrived in the village, the sun had already begun to set. Xie He went home first and waited for the two of them at the village entrance.
Seeing the brother and sister relieved her anxiety, but her anger flared up again when she saw her youngest son grinning foolishly, and she ran towards them:
"Xiao Liu! Why did it take you so long to bring your sister back?!" she angrily demanded of Wen Zi.
Upon seeing her, Wen Luozhi's eyes lit up, and she immediately stepped in front of her, explaining, "Mother, I wanted to play a little longer."
"Look, what did we catch?" She mysteriously lifted a corner of Wen Zixun's undershirt, revealing a few pheasant feathers.
