Chapter 130 Trials and Tribulations - I Am the Protagonist
Chapter 130 Trials and Tribulations - I Am the Protagonist
Under the blazing sun, the sunlight baked the earth, bringing a touch of warmth, dispelling the chill of early spring, and bringing life to the land.
At the border of Dayanzhou and Guyuanzhou lies a small town called Jun'an. Its easternmost point connects to the sea. To the south lies Guyuanzhou, a region with many mountains and lakes, relatively wealthy. To the north lies Dayanzhou, mostly plains, where the people are known for their fierce and rugged nature. As a border town between the two prefectures, Jun'an is perpetually overcrowded, serving as a vital hub for the exchange of goods between the two regions.
Today is market day in town, and the streets and alleys are packed with people. Even though it's freezing cold outside, it can't dampen people's enthusiasm.
"...Speaking of the affairs of the martial world, most disputes cannot escape the word 'love.' Every year there are several incidents caused by love. For example, the massacre of the Jing family in Jing Family Village that I mentioned last year was because the beautiful woman married by the village head had a powerful lover, and as a result, she lost her life in vain. So, the word 'love' can do a lot of harm!"
In the inn facing the street, two tables were pushed together to form a podium. A middle-aged man with a small mustache sat in front of the table, wearing a tall hat, holding a folding fan, and sighing with a nod.
"Blind Wang, stop sighing and keep going!"
Some impatient listeners urged them to hurry.
"Don't rush, don't rush, if you rush, I'll forget what I was going to say..." Blind Wang squinted, paused for a moment, "Oh right, today, I'm going to tell you about something that's happened in the martial arts world recently. The cause of this matter is still because of the word 'love'..."
Blind Wang spoke slowly and deliberately; those with a more impatient temperament wouldn't have the patience to listen to him continue. Ju An carried a small bucket filled halfway with water. He would occasionally dip a rag in the water and wipe up the mess left behind by the departing guests, thinking to himself idly.
His movements were sluggish and he didn't seem to be working seriously. However, because of the market today, the inn was crowded with people. With the two tables set up by Blind Wang and the crowd surrounding them, the busy innkeeper couldn't attend to anything else.
Ju An sat there, slowly wiping the table for a long time.
"Waiter, when are you going to clean this table? There are no seats left around here, this is the only one available. Are you deliberately hogging the table and preventing us from eating?"
Finally, someone couldn't stand it anymore and angrily asked.
Ju An didn't argue with him, and simply put away the rag, saying, "I'm done wiping, please have a seat!"
"you!"
The man's anger was trapped inside, unable to escape, causing him great discomfort.
Ju An didn't have time to care about the other person's feelings. He gave a perfunctory bow, turned around, and left.
Taking advantage of the innkeeper's busy schedule, Ju An secretly slipped to the back of the inn, found a deserted spot, and sat down with a sigh.
I've been working as a waiter at this inn for ten days now, and I still don't know when the person I'm waiting for will arrive. That damn innkeeper really treats me like a waiter, ordering me around without any courtesy. I'll definitely have to deal with that innkeeper properly when I get back.
ah~
With another sigh, Ju An resignedly stood up. He couldn't stay here too long, otherwise, if the opportunity really came and he missed it, that would be a huge loss.
As soon as he returned to the inn's lobby, Ju An chose a table near the door and began wiping it slowly once again.
This time he didn't wipe for long; two people and a horse approaching from afar caught his attention.
Could this pair be the ones I've been waiting for?
The market was bustling with people, and pedestrians often bumped into each other, but there was one place where there was still an empty space.
What caused the market-goers to scatter was a pair of people and a horse. The one leading the way was a young man with messy, curly hair that frizzed down his face. His face was also covered in soot, making it difficult to make out his features, but he seemed quite handsome. His clothes were tattered and full of holes, and he wore shoes with his toes showing. He gripped the reins tightly in his right hand, leading a large white horse. The horse was as tall as a man, pure white without a single blemish, and held its head high with an air of arrogance. It was clearly a prized horse. The horse was adorned with a saddle inlaid with gold and silver, and on the saddle sat a small child, exquisitely beautiful, who was so lovely that one couldn't help but feel affection for him.
However, the little child looked listless, with his head drooping and a pale face. The two people and the horse seemed strange in every way.
For some reason, people instinctively made way for them.
The beggar-like man in front slowly stopped his horse in front of an inn. Seemingly tired, he looked up at the inn's signboard and loosened his grip on the reins.
"...This inn looks nice, let's rest here for a while." The man, dressed in tattered clothes, spoke, his voice gentle and refined, like that of a scholar, but his weak voice detracted from its pleasantness.
After saying that, the man walked into the inn, completely ignoring the little child still on horseback.
Yu Liu looked at the distance between herself and the ground, unsure of what to do.
"Hey! How do I get down?"
Left with no other option, Yu Liu had to seek help.
Junran, whose steps were unsteady, stopped walking towards the inn and turned around, saying weakly, "Jump down! Don't worry, you won't die!"
The two of them were already attracting attention, and as soon as Junran said that, there was a lot of discussion around them. Everyone felt that it was too cruel of him to treat such a small child like that. However, the situation between the two of them looked too strange, and no one stepped forward to help.
Yu Liu looked at Jun Ran, who had already entered the inn, and felt wronged. She glanced at the ground that seemed so far away to her. Under the watchful eyes of everyone, she couldn't use magic in front of mortals. It seemed that jumping down was the only way.
With her eyes closed, she used her hands to support herself and flipped over, falling straight off the horse. Luckily, she landed on her bottom first, and apart from a slight thud, she was unharmed.
Tears welled up in Yu Liu's eyes from the pain, but there was no one to comfort her now. The only person she knew, Jun Ran, was probably still not over her identity. She could only dust herself off, stand up, and follow Jun Ran into the inn.
The white horse that had been left behind strolled leisurely to the tree in front of the inn and stood quietly.
"Sir, are you looking for a meal or to stay the night?"
Driven by a secret suspicion, Ju An immediately approached Jun Ran and asked with a bright smile.
"Let's have a bite! Stay at the inn! She'll pay!" Junran's voice was still weak and listless. He slowly pointed to Yuliu who had followed behind him, then stepped into the inn and sat down at the table that Ju'an had just wiped clean.
Ju An's suspicions were confirmed once again, and his smile grew even brighter.
Having overheard their conversation, Yu Liu rummaged through her clothes and pulled out a money pouch from her bosom. Unable to discern the different amounts of money, she casually took out a single bill and handed it to Ju An. "Two superior rooms, and some of your restaurant's signature dishes!"
Without waiting for Ju An's reaction, he sat down at the table and waited for the food to be served.
Even though we don't need to eat, it's still nice to taste the flavor.
Thinking about her current situation, Yu Liu sighed dramatically, rested her chin on her hands, and stared blankly into space.
To explain why she and Junran ended up here, we need to go back to after Yu Liu left Miao Yeyu.
