TORQ P120 is a a unique Windows Mobile 5 based smartphone. It’s a candybar shaped smartphone with no keyboard and attractive with a matte black color. And it’s small enough to fit in a pocket. The P120’s screen is 2.8 inch LCD with a resolution of 240×320 pixels. It’s very bright, clear and easy to see even with the backlight at half strength. The LED on the right shows charge status and status of the GSM/GPRS radio. The LED on the left of the screen flashes blue when the Bluetooth radio is enabled and flashes amber when the Wifi radio is turned on and with both radios on, the two colors are flashing.
There are also 4 buttons and a 5-way directional pad below the screen. There is a button to access Contacts, one to access the M-Desk utility, a green phone button to dial, and a red phone button to end calls. The directional pad is a little small. There are the 1.3 megapixel camera, a light for the camera, and a nice little convex mirror for self pictures on the back of the phone. On the left side of the device is a spring-loaded slider switch to control the volume that controls the speaker volume on calls and a button to activate the camera application and to capture a picture. On the bottom edge there is a hole for the microphone, and the jack to plug the device in for charging.
The TORQ P120 supports the Samsung S3C 2440 400 MHz processor. The processor was very snappy and responsive under normal use. The operating systems is Windows Mobile 5. The 2.8 inch 240×320 screen was bright and easy to see, even if the backlight wasn’t on all the way. It was perfectly viewable in direct sunlight. The memory is 128MB of SDRAM and 64MB of flash ROM. For communication the phone has a quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) GSM/GPRS radio, 802.11b Wifi radio, and Bluetooth 1.2 radio. An SD slot on the top of the device is the primary method for expansion. The Bluetooth connection also allows some expansion.
The speaker and speakerphone were good but on the max volume, the audio was tinny-sounding, distorted and the phone is not really usable. With normal use, the battery get about 3 days before charging. The camera can capture 1.3 megapixel (1280×1024) images and it is a typical one that you’ll find in a phone. The phone size is 4.4″ x 2.4″ x .87″ and it weighs in at 5.82 ounces with battery.
The TORQ P120 is nice looking and has a nice screen, but it falls short in some areas. The speaker performance was less than ideal and the device had some usability issues and possible build quality issues. This phone is not widely available, not too usable, the speaker unimpressive and expensive. But it has a good battery, Nice size, attractive design, Windows Mobile 5 OS and Wifi radio.
